Kateřina Šedá

Artist, Project Creator

Kateřina Šedá is a Czech artist whose work closely borders on social architecture. For the Marathon music Brno (Maraton hudby Brno) festival, she is the creative force behind the Streetless Busking (Bezuliční busking) concept, which moves private spaces (rooms) into the public sphere of the city. Since the early years—when she invited musicians to perform in unexpected places like balconies, cars, underground tunnels, and escalators—she has evolved the project into the “apartment concert” phenomenon (starting in 2019). Her rooms (including a medical clinic during the covid pandemic or a video rental store) sensitively respond to current social themes and anniversaries. In 2025, during the festival’s 10th anniversary, she pushed the project even further: a tramper’s log cabin with an open bonfire was built on Freedom Square (Náměstí Svobody). For the first time, the project allowed the public to not only sing together by the fire in the city center but also to legally spend the night in an open-air “room,” completing her vision of fully connecting private and public life. For this kind of work, Kateřina is a recipient of many prestigious awards, including the most famous one Jindřich Chalupecký Award.

She ensures the event runs smoothly, managing both administrative support and operational production.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT

This project would not be possible without the support of the City of Brno, TIC Brno, and the Maraton hudby Brno festival.

Streetless Busking (Bezuliční busking) is a part of the Maraton hudby Brno festival, which is a key musical event for the city as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the field of music.

We would like to thank the organizations and partners who have joined the project over the years: the VESNA Women’s Educational Association for their collaboration on the Ukrainian stage, painter Jevgenia Vlasova, Lucie Řehoříková for production assistance, Veselka Microbrewery, and the Brno shop Hůlkárna for providing props.

Our thanks go to the annual team of volunteers who enthusiastically help with the realization in the streets. Finally, our gratitude belongs to all the residents of Brno who opened their (not only) metaphorical doors, and to all the visitors who weren’t afraid to jump into a bathtub, sit at a stranger’s table, or sleep by a bonfire on Freedom Square.
